Unfortunately, JCVD is at its core an action movie, even though it uses Jean-Claude Van Damme's persona — from his movies and from what we imagine to be his real life — to layer a melancholy, humanizing, but eventually sidelined satire on top of it.

Despite a likable cast, Role Models follows an increasingly stale formula of sweet raunch. One performer who consistently generates laughs is Jane Lynch whose cliché-ridden boasts reach a form of pop-psych poetry; they'd be funny even if they weren't punctuated by Rudd's reactions.
